Embedded firmly in the history of the Space Coast are two very disparate creatures: cows and sea turtles. Long before the rockets’ red glare, cattle were an important part of the area’s culture and economy. As for the sea turtles, they’ve been nesting on our beaches since well before the indigenous Ais were busy harvesting shellfish from the Indian River Lagoon.

The scene is bucolic, timeless. As the morning mist lifts, cowboys on horseback with dogs at their sides weave their way among a herd of cattle. It could be a pastoral scene from the TV drama, Yellowstone. Instead, it is happening in Viera, not far from shopping centers, high-tech companies, restaurants and bustling traffic.

It was a hot day in 1892 as Bone Mizell and two cowpoke companions rode the brush flats of central Florida in search of stray cattle. They spotted a tawny bag of bones with murderous horns — but no brand — at the edge of a thorny thicket.
