discover the space coast giving back

Brevard County’s nonprofits are hard at work to enhance the quality
of life in the Space Coast.
If there is a need, there is a charity ready to pour heart and soul to
help. Volunteers — thousands of them — are at the core of all these
worthy organizations. They give their time, talent and treasure, but
more are always welcome to join.
Volunteer opportunities encompass everything from environmental
organizations and animal rescue groups to human service agencies
and cultural entities.
United Way of Brevard www.uwbrevard.org is a perfect
starting point for discovering volunteer opportunities, as
are www.volunteermatch.org and www.justserve.org.
At Brevard Zoo, volunteers can serve as docents who
introduce visitors to the animal residents. The Sea
Turtle Preservation Society raises awareness of the
importance of the Space Coast as a prime nesting site
for these amazing ocean-going reptiles. Harmony Farms
volunteers help riders with disabilities rediscover their
confidence through equine assisted therapy.
The Women’s Center, which assists victims of domestic
abuse, depends on volunteers to raise awareness and
funds. Volunteers mentor at-risk children through the
local chapters of organizations such as Big Brothers Big
Sisters. Aging Matters in Brevard could not deliver its Meals
on Wheels without a battalion of volunteers. Volunteers
pack weekend food that The Children Hunger Project delivers
to thousands of schoolchildren at risk of going hungry. All three
hospital systems, as well as hospices such as St. Francis Reflections
Lifestage Care, are grateful for the assistance volunteers provide.
A huge benefit of volunteering as an usher
with the Maxwell C. King Center for the
Performing Arts is the opportunity to see
top-name artists and Broadway touring
productions. Brevard Symphony Orchestra
and the Space Coast Symphony welcome
volunteers in a variety of jobs and other
arts organization are always eager to share
their goals with volunteers.
There will never be a shortage of volunteer
jobs in Brevard, and, fortunately, there is also
MAXWELL C. KING CENTER no shortage of volunteers.
