EDUCATION
PUBLIC EDUCATION
Brevard is headquarters for major corporations
involved in the space industry, but the Space Coast’s
largest employer is — drumroll, please — Brevard
Public Schools.
BPS employs approximately 8,000 staff members to
serve 73,000 students each year. Such a large number
of students needs a lot of schools, 84 to be exact,
plus 15 special centers in 17 municipalities across
the Space Coast.
“Our mission is to serve every student with excellence
as the standard,” said Russell Bruhn, chief strategic
communications officer for the school district.
The county’s public school system, which enjoys a
90.6 percent graduation rate, is also top-ranked in
career and technical education programs, since it
offers 82 different industry certifications.
More than 500 students in the school district are dual
enrollment students working toward an associate
degree while still in high school.
According to the Florida Educators’ Association, the
teaching staff in Brevard public schools is ranked the
third most experienced in the state. Out of the 27 high
schools in the county, U.S. News and World Report
considers seven among the best in the state. Westshore
Junior/Senior High School was rated fourth among all
the high schools in Florida, based on graduation rates,
state test scores and college preparation.
PRIVATE EDUCATION
In addition to an outstanding public school system,
Brevard offers a network of more than 60 excellent
private schools.
Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy is one of the leading
independent college preparatory schools in the
state and is ranked No. 1 Best Private K-12 School in
Brevard. Immersive classes that foster inquiry and
project-based learning are offered, as well as cocurricular
experiences beyond traditional classroom
academics, with an emphasis on critical thinking,
creativity, communication, collaboration and building
leadership skills.
Among many other faith-based schools is Melbourne
Central Catholic High School, winner of the prestigious
U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School
of Excellence.
In West Melbourne, Calvary Chapel Academy prepares
students for a life of fruitful Christian service through
a biblically-integrated curriculum.
HOLY TRINITY EPISCOPAL ACADEMY
Melbourne’s Florida Preparatory
Academy, a private boarding and
day school, attracts students from
around the globe with a college
preparatory curriculum that
emphasizes, leadership, character,
accountability and trust.
