of greatness,” Florida Institute of
Technology has assembled a community

The private, accredited, co-educational,
research-intensive university in
Melbourne is celebrating 60 years since
physicist Jerome Keuper launched a
school to offer educational opportunities
for engineers in the space industry.
The only independent technological
university in the Southeastern United
States, Florida Tech is committed to
providing its culturally diverse student
body a high-quality education in the
sciences, engineering, technology,
business, psychology, liberal arts,
aviation and related disciplines.
The school ranks among the top 50
universities among the approximately
300 colleges and universities in the
South, according to the Wall Street
Journal/Times Higher Education College
Rankings.
In 2020, U.S. News and World Report
included Florida Tech in the top tier
of universities in the United States,
marking the school’s 10th consecutive
appearance in the influential guide for
prospective students and their families.
The university’s hands-on approach
to education includes a cooperative

education program, field research
projects, capstone experiences,
countless research opportunities and
job and internship connections at major
employers like Northrop Grumman
Corp., NASA at Kennedy Space Center,

Florida Tech continues to evolve with
the needs of students. Understanding
the significance biomedical and health
sciences will have for society in the
years to come, Florida Tech will open the
state-of-the-art Gordon L. Nelson Health
Sciences Building on its Melbourne
campus in early 2022.
Nelson, an accomplished polymer
chemist who has spent nearly his
entire career as a dean and professor
at Florida Tech, recently pledged $5.1
million toward the building that bears
his name.
The three-story, 61,000-square-foot
building will be the epicenter for teaching
and research centered on biomedical
engineering, biomedical sciences and
health sciences. It will feature more than
20,000 square feet of classrooms and
research laboratories, state-of-the-art
