Surf ’s
While the Space Coast has long been
known for its famous rocket launches, it
is also one of the most popular surfing
and paddle boarding destinations on
the eastern seaboard.
Brevard’s 72 miles of beaches — from
Sebastian Inlet to Playalinda — have
honed the skills of many of the greatest
surfers including 11-time world
champion Kelly Slater of Cocoa Beach
and Caroline Marks of Melbourne Beach,
an Olympian and a competitor on the
World Surf League’s Championship Tour.
The popularity of surfing on the Space
Coast ignited in the 1960s, after talented
teens from Cocoa Beach made names
for themselves at what was then known
as the Cape Canaveral Pier.
As the sport flourished, local surfers rose
to fame after winning numerous East
Coast contests and appearing in popular
surf magazines. Just a few decades later,
many Space Coast natives became the
first to be inducted into the East Coast
Surfing Hall of Fame.
Brevard’s barrier islands are home to
hundreds of local surfboard craftsmen
and dozens of surf shops, including
Ron Jon Surf Shop, Cocoa Beach Surf
Company and Catalyst Surf Shop in
Cocoa Beach; Balsa Bills in Satellite
Beach; and MTB Surf Emporium and
the Longboard House in Indialantic
All offer a variety of everything surf
related, from surf boards, paddle
boards, clothing, beach equipment and
accessories, wetsuits, hats, sunglasses,
and more.
The Florida Surf Museum in the north
annex of Ron Jon Surf Shop preserves
and documents all aspects of the
unique history and culture of surfing
on Florida’s east coast.
Exhibits showcase vintage surfboards,
photographs, videos and other
memorabilia. Entrance to the museum
is free and paid memberships are
welcome.
The nonprofit is co-sponsor of several
annual surfing events, including the
Waterman’s Challenge, held in June,
and the Cocoa Beach Surfing Santas
festivities on Christmas Eve.
