The Loews Don CeSar, affectionately known as “The Don” by the locals, is an icon on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Its pink walls and grand stature sits 10 stories high on the sugar-fine beaches of St. Pete Beach and resembles that of a Mediterranean-style castle. Its distinctive color and Moorish architecture makes it not only one of the most recognizable landmarks in the area but also a point of reference on maritime charts.
Built at the height of the Gatsby Era in 1928, Florida’s “Pink Palace” has a long and acclaimed history. Upon opening, the Don CeSar was a hot spot for high society with the likes of notable celebrities such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In 1942, three years after the builder and investor Thomas Rowe passed away, his beloved “pink lady” was acquired and used as a hospital by the U.S. Army. By the end of the 1940s, it had also been an Air Force convalescent and a regional office for the Veteran’s administration, which they later vacated in late 1968.
By 1972, this landmark was covered with graffiti and was planned for demolition.
This was met with fierce opposition and the Don CeSar reopened in 1973 after a $7.5 million restoration. One year later, this luxury hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Don CeSar Beach Resort became a Loews Hotel in 2003 and since the new ownership has taken over, the rooms, restaurants and meeting space have been revitalized. Today, it is the perfect setting for rest and relaxation. Whether you’re looking for a girls’ trip or a romantic getaway, the Loews Don CeSar offers plenty of avenues for relaxation.
Take a Dip –
St. Pete Beach has been voted one of the best beaches in the world. From water sport rentals to beach rentals like cabanas, you’re steps away from the Gulf of Mexico and the pool. There are two beachfront heated pools, and the poolside concierge provides you with pampering treats and services such as chilled hand towels, cucumber water and smoothies.
Work It Out –
Along with all the equipment you need for a great workout, the fitness and wellness center offers a variety of complimentary classes that include beach yoga, water aerobics, and Zumba. Don’t forget you can always take a walk (or run) down the beach.
Spa Oceana –
The spa at the Loews Don CeSar will induce a feeling of balance. Try one of their signature massages or facials or maybe a manicure and pedicure. Everything they do is meant to spoil you.
The newly renovated rooms and suites are decorated in soothing tones of blue and sand. Each room is spacious and can accommodate families as well as pets and have stunning views of the Boca Ciega Bay or the Gulf of Mexico.
The Don offers six dining and lounge options on the property with the Maritana Grille voted as one of the top 10 seafood restaurants in the United States by “Gayot Guide.” The Lobby Bar is in the epicenter of the hotel and is a relaxing way to end your day. While live music plays, sip on a custom, seasonal creation by their mioxologist and watch the sun set over the gulf.
