Florida Tech’s Surf Team Makes a Splash on the West Coast
Competing against the top 16 college teams, Florida Institute of Technology’s surf team finished eighth in the nation during the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championships in mid June. The group of eight students traveled to Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point, CA to participate in their first national competition as the top ranked Florida team. During the East Coast Championship in April FIT finished second only to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington team among east coast teams. In California surf team captain and business manager Sebastian Moreno and Justin Ellingham (co-captain) advanced through the semi-finals and finished eight and seventh respectively. “We are grateful that the school has given us the opportunity to compete on a national level,” said Moreno “and we look to better our team in the years to come. Hey, eighth in the nation isn’t bad given this is our first year competing as a surf team.”
