You’ve probably heard about CrossFit, one of the fastest growing strength and conditioning programs today. But do you really know what it is? Like so many health and fitness trends or topics, there is confusion, misinformation and misunderstanding. The truth is CrossFit’s core foundation is built on maximizing one’s capacity to perform functional movements, like picking up heavy bags of fertilizer, stacking boxes overhead, or even squatting down to help our children tie their shoes. Translation: any one can do it.
Space Coast CrossFit’s mission is to teach any person of any age the physical, emotional and psychological benefits of being truly fit by incorporating the methods of CrossFit, nutrition application and developing the confidence-building skills required to live life to its fullest. Translation: this is not the typical health and fitness club.
CrossFit combines strength training, plyometrics, Olympic weightlifting, kettlebell movements, bodyweight exercises, and endurance work. Workouts are led by coaches who show in great detail each exercise. All workouts are done in a group setting and begin with a warm up then move on to strength training and the workout of the day. The workout of the day or “WOD” rarely exceeds ten minutes.
Space Coast CrossFit, located just north of the Pineda Causeway on US 1 in the former Space Coast Harley-Davidson building, epitomizes the empowering sense of camaraderie and support that most CrossFit members gush about. The 18,000 square foot facility is clean, professional and safe.
“This location is a blessing,” Chad said. “I drove by it every day for years; I always imagined that it would make such a perfect location for a CrossFit.”
After first leasing out the second floor, he has now expanded to the first floor as well. With the expansion, SCC is able to offer more classes, reduce class sizes and focus on the individual attention of the athletes.
Monday through Friday, classes begin as early as 5 a.m. and take place throughout the day until 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. The method is all about setting performance goals and not chasing a number — you will lose weight, get stronger and see more muscle definition.
“Usually in about nine weeks you’ll begin to see a difference in your body,” according to Chad.
Whether you are 87 years of age or 87 pounds overweight, CrossFit can be individualized to meet those performance goals. Chad describes the coaches as each athlete’s biggest fan; they create the sense of community that is important for members.
“Since the very first day I started CrossFit over five years ago, I tell as many people as possible how much it’s changed my life and that the absolute hardest part of starting is just walking through the door on day one.”
