A Softer Take on 2016:
Pantone and Sherwin-Williams Set Colors of the Year
For the first time, Pantone introduced two shades — Rose Quartz and Serenity — as the Pantone Colors of the Year 2016. Pantone’s Colors of the Year is a symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what is taking place in culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude. Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times. Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design.
Serenity and Rose Quartz
Whether on their own or combined with other shades, the pairing of Serenity and Rose Quartz bring a feeling of calm and relaxation into the home environment. Like a serene sunset, Rose Quartz encourages reflection on one’s surroundings while Serenity, a transcendent blue, provides a naturally connected sense of space.
An ideal choice for rugs and upholstery, Serenity and Rose Quartz also work well in paint and for decorative accessories. Coupling solid and patterned fabrics, throws, pillows and bedding in these shades provides a comforting respite and feeling of well-being in the home. Incorporating texture enhances the duality and kinship of these hues.
Serenity and Rose Quartz colored kitchen items and tableware, as well as home accessories like candles, decorative bowls, vases and florals, add subtle color accents while contributing to a welcoming and peaceful space. Translucent, glazing, matte and metallic shine are key finishes.
Alabaster
Sherwin-Williams announced its 2016 Color of the Year as Alabaster (SW 7008), a hue that is said to be symbolic of new beginnings. The shade is drawn from Pura Vida, one of the four palettes included in Sherwin-Williams’ Color Forecast 2016.
It offers variety in ways it can be used. It can be its own monochromatic statement or it can be paired with any other hue, making it the ultimate complementary color. If pairing Alabaster with other hues, Sherwin-Williams suggests other neutrals such a Doeskin, Urbane Bronze or Wool Skein or brighter hues such as Retro Mint, Antique Red or Vintage Gold.
