Just half an hour from the hubbub and seemingly relentless development at Viera, the trappings of today’s Florida are replaced by airboats and old docks, tea-colored swaths of water leading to the horizon, enticing platters heaped with gator nuggets, catfish and frog legs, and landscapes teeming with wildlife.
The Space Coast is home to miles of beautiful beaches for soaking up the sun, wildlife trails for hiking and exploring, and riverways for water sports and fishing — there’s much to do and see here. Sometimes, though, we just need to get away from it all.
“This isn’t your momma’s airport, anymore,” says Keely Leggett, public information officer for the Melbourne-Orlando International Airport in Melbourne. The numbers back up that declaration, as a massive growth spurt has seen passenger traffic triple since 2020.
The development of the Melbourne airport as a hub for tourist flights from all over Great Britain is resulting in a mini-British invasion for the Space Coast.
