The season of giving is upon us and with so many different philanthropic groups needing a helping hand, there is certainly no shortage of options when it comes to your charitable donations. With the help of the folks at United Way of Brevard, the Brevard Cultural Alliance and the Community Foundation of Brevard, SpaceCoast Living has assembled a lengthly list of local non-profit organizations. Community Foundation Brevard President/CEO Sandi Scannelli and her staff helped compile this list of 501 (c) groups, all of which are deserving of your attention. And remember, if money is a little tight this year, most would be happy with the gift of your time, so get out and volunteer, and make everyone’s holiday season a little brighter.

Atlantic Center for the Arts

A multidisciplinary artist residency facility located in New Smyrna Beach

(386) 427-6975

www.aca35.org

Founded in in 1977 by Doris Leeper, an internationally known sculptor and painter, as well as a visionary environmentalist, Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) is a non-profit multidisciplinary artist residency facility located in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Please visit History of ACA and Locations for more information.

ACA organizes many programs for artists of all ages and professional levels.

Master Artist-in-Residence Program

The Master Artist Residency was the core program at our founding, and it has served over 3,500 emerging and mid-career artists from many disciplines. The residency is unique in that it is a mentoring program that couples prominent Master Artists with selected Associate Artists for three week periods. Since residencies are process based, and not product-driven, time can be spent on previously existing projects, on new experiments, or on collaborations. The residency is also unique in that it focuses on creating conversations and the sharing of ideas between three disciplines per program, which can include visual artists, writers, dancers, and musicians as well as many other types of art. ACA believes that the spirit and challenges of being an artist are shared by all disciplines and that we can learn much from coming together, sharing our work and ideas, and collaborating on projects. Please visit About the Master Artists-in-Residence Program to learn more.

Community Artist in Residence Program

Beginning in fall of 2012, ACA will launch an innovative Community Artist-in-Residence Program that focuses on bringing artist with a community based practice to New Smyrna Beach. Two four month residencies will occur every year, and will operate out of our Harris House location. During this residency, the artist will create projects and organize programs for everyone in our community.

Your Word Teen Writing Residency

Another core program of ACA is the annual your word Teen Writing Residency. Structured much like our Master Artist Residency, the program connects teenage writers with acclaimed Master Artists for a 12 day period in the summer.

Community Programs

ACA also has a focus on our community. Programs include a popular Children’s Art Camp, Artist Lectures, Exhibitions, Community Artist in-Residence Events, Images: A Festival for the Arts and Volunteer Opportunities.

Internship Program

Atlantic Center for the Arts internship program provides residential and non-residential opportunities for year-round learning experiences in arts administration to college students or graduates, with a variety of specialization options.

Facility Rentals

ACA is available for many types of rental opportunities. Many privately organized workshops have been held here for many types of art. Groups have organized events and performances in our theater space, and even designed their own private retreats and residencies that tailor to their own interests and outcomes. Other programs and retreats can also be held here as well, such as Weddings, Parties, and Corporate Retreats.

Support

Becoming a member is the easiest way to show your support for the organization. Your annual membership will help support all of our programs that provide excellent artistic experiences to New Smyrna Beach, the greater Orlando area, the United States and the World!

You can also support ACA by attending fundraising events including our annual auction Horsin’ Around, and an annual open house, ACA Exposed. The events are designed to fun, informative, and socially engaging for all supporters and lovers of the arts!

If you interested in volunteering your time to the organization, ACA has many ways you can be involved. Volunteers are the backbone of any successful nonprofit and volunteering your time will help ensure ACA can move forward with strength and distinction on in its programming endeavors.

Finally, you can support ACA by sharing our events and mission with your friends and family. You can join our mailing list, become a fan on facebook, follow us on twitter, and visit our youtube channel. We would like everyone to know about the exciting programs that happen here, and everything you share helps.

The Brevard Community College Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization chartered to provide for the financial needs of the college that cannot be met through state aid or student tuition.
The BCC Foundation enhances access and quality of education for students by attracting and managing private donor-driven contributions from individuals, corporations, and private foundations.
With college costs continually on the rise, the challenge remains to provide the means for all students to succeed in reaching their academic goals, regardless of financial circumstances. Scholarships provide students in need the opportunity to start, continue or enhance their education by providing financial support for tuition, fees, books, and other related expenses. By partnering with the BCC Foundation you are creating the means for all students to have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of financial circumstance.
Of the top five reasons students cite for dropping out of college, four are financial. Are you interested in supporting the financial needs of deserving students seeking to obtain a higher education or are you seeking a lasting way to honor or memorialize a loved one? If so, then we encourage you to consider establishing a scholarship through the Brevard Community College Foundation.

Each year in July Brevard Schools Foundation holds the Back to School Supply Drive and Safari to provide those basic supplies to income eligible students.
This past July, Brevard Schools Foundation, in partnership with South Brevard Sharing Center and CenterPointe Christian Church, North Brevard Charities Sharing Center, and the Biddix Family Foundation, provided backpacks and school supplies to 4,200 of the 32,000 eligible students.

The late Archbishop Miot of Haiti said, “Our schools will feed the children’s minds for years to come… and it is far better than feeding them for only a few days.”

The 39 Steps
Adapted by: Patrick Barlow
From the novel by: John Buchan
(from the movie of Alfred Hitchcock)
Production Dates
August 17 – September 23, 2012
Fri and Sat at 8pm
Sun at 2pm
Synopsis: Combining a spy thriller with farcical comedy and ingenious theatrical invention, The 39 Steps is an engaging, fast-paced whodunit that celebrates the magic of theater. Closely following the storyline of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, the play features more than 150 characters brought to life by a cast of just four actors – all putting their many sidesplitting skills to the test in this wildly entertaining experience.
The Foreigner
by: Larry Shue
Production Dates
October 12 – November 18, 2012
Fri and Sat at 8pm
Sun at 2pm
Auditions: August 26 & 27 at 7:00pm
Winner of two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production.
Synopsis: The scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by “Froggy” LeSeuer, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time “Froggy” has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So “Froggy,” before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should—the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the minister’s pretty fiancée is pregnant; and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the “bad guys,” and the “good guys” emerge triumphant.
Holidays with Dino
Starring Alfie Silva as Dean Martin
Production Dates
December 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 2012 at 8pm

Auditions: October 14 & 15 at 7:00pm
Synopsis: Join us for a nostalgic look back at the 1960s’ Dean Martin Show, as we enjoy some holiday favorites of Dino’s and his friends who arrive on his doorstep unexpectedly. Last year’s most popular Holiday show of the season is back for more holiday cheer.
On Golden Pond
by: Ernest Thompson
Production Dates
January 18 – February 24, 2013
Fri and Sat at 8pm
Sun at 2pm
Auditions: November 18 & 19 at 7:00pm
Synopsis: The plot focuses on aging couple Ethel and Norman Thayer, who spend each summer at their home on a lake called Golden Pond. During the year the story takes place, they are visited by daughter Chelsea with her fiancé and his son in tow. The play explores the often-turbulent relationship the young woman shared with her father growing up, and the difficulties faced by a couple in the twilight years of a long marriage.
Into the Woods
Lyrics and music by: Stephen Sondheim
Book by: James Lapine
Production Dates
March 15 – April 21, 2013
Fri and Sat at 8pm
Sun at 2pm
Auditions: January 20 & 21 at 7:00pm
Synopsis: An ambivalent Cinderella? A bloodthirsty Little Red Riding hood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch…who raps? They’re all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of The Princess Bride becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
One of Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods is a timeless yet relevant piece and a rare modern classic.
The Heiress
by: Ruth and Augustus Goet
Suggested by: Henry James’ novel Washington Square
Production Dates
May 17 – June 23, 2013
Fri and Sat at 8pm
Sun at 2pm
Auditions: March 24 & 25 at 7:00pm
Synopsis: The background of the play is New York in the 1850s and the basic story tells of a shy and plain young girl, Catherine Sloper, who falls desperately in love with a delightful young fortune hunter. Catherine’s lack of worldliness prevents her from realizing that the young man proposing to her is not entirely drawn to her by her charm. Catherine’s father, a successful doctor, sees through the fortune hunter and forbids the marriage, but his daughter proposes an elopement that fails to materialize because the young man knows most of her expected fortune will go elsewhere if he marries her. Catherine retires into a little world of her own. But the fortune hunter turns up once more and again proposes to her. For a moment, Catherine leads him to believe that she will accept him, but when he calls by appointment, she locks the door, blows out all the lights and allows him to realize that she will not be fooled for the second time.

Signature Event: Community Outreach Program to Senior Facilities
Event Information: The benefits of singing, and the enjoyment in our performances is plain to see when Platinum Coast Chorus takes our unique style of harmony singing into facilities such as Hibiscus Court Assisted Living or Joe’s Club, the Alzheimer’s Day Care Center.
People, who are normally totally unresponsive, come alive when a song triggers a deeply buried memory. All our audiences love to sing along with golden oldies from the past, invaluable exercise for both the mind and the body.
But over the past few years, PCC has noticed a disturbing trend in the requests for performances we receive from senior facilities. In 2009, out of 18 performances, only 5 were performed free of charge and 9 were given for a reduced fee. Over the past 12 months, those figures have changed to 20 performances, 10 free of charge and 8 at a reduced fee.
By August of 2012, our Performance Manager had already received 7 requests for free performances before Christmas, several from facilities who used to be able to afford our regular fee.
Much as we would love to be able to fulfill all these Outreach requests, we can only commit our volunteers to a certain number of performances per month, and we have financial commitments that must be covered by our paid performances. Funding from sponsors is gratefully received and is essential if we are to be able to continue to offer free performances.

WWP is looking to fund programs that enhance the lives of Wounded Warriors and their families by supporting programs that fall into our four core service areas: Mind, Body, Economic Empowerment, and Engagement. We are especially interested in those opportunities that focus on the mental health of this generation of Wounded Warriors or expand services to Wounded Warriors living in remote or underserved areas.

AVET Project invites you to join us in meeting the NEEDS of our brave men and women who are currently serving in combat and those who have returned home.
These patriotic Americans have voluntarily given up so much to keep us safe, AVET Project is on a mission to raise money as well as collect donations for Project Recuperation and Reintegration (PR&R), a retreat-based outreach program.
Once a military member returns from duty in a combat zone, AVET Project selects applicants on a first-come, first-served basis to participate in a retreat where they can decompress, relax, and reconnect with one another.
AVET Project staff members and volunteers provide instruction on reintegration issues, coping methods, relaxation skills, as well as stress mediation techniques. Suicide risk assessment and PTSD/TBI screenings are provided along with personal and group therapy regarding these and other reintegration issues facing our warrior’s return to civilian life. A flexible itinerary is followed so the participant can choose to partake or simply skip a topic, if desired.
In addition, certified hypnotherapists & counselors holding certification from DoD Center for Deployed Psychology assist each participant in dealing with unresolved issues.
Ground transportation, meals, lodging, course materials, massage, and recreational opportunities are provided absolutely FREE. Every program & service offered by AVET Project is totally free to the participant

(The) Children’s Hunger Project

Provides hungry young people on the Space Coast with weekend food backpacks with a goal of ensuring elementary school-age children do not have to experience hunger.

www.thechildrenshungerproject.org

Contact Name: Bob Barnes
Contact Email: bob@thechildrenshungerproject.org
Signature Event: Food Wrapping Sessions
Event Information: The Children’s Hunger Project program to feed hungry children on weekends is about as simple in concept and implementation as our nine-word business plan. SEE A HUNGRY KID. BUY FOOD. FEED THE KID. Every Friday, kids who we can afford to help get food to carry home in their backpack. Food items include, for example, ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs, milk, juice, breakfast bar, cereal and other similar food items. This type of food is kid-friendly…meaning it is lightweight, healthy and easy for the kids to handle since no cooking is required. On Monday, the kids return to school but with a better and healthier foundation for learning. Then the cycle begins again the next Friday. At least on weekends, “our” kids have basic nutrition.
The Children’s Hunger Project does not discuss social issues, the parent’s lifestyle or what their responsibility should be. We focus only on the fact that there are kids in our town going hungry on weekends. We solve that weekend hunger problem for some elementary school kids.
What does Brevard County get in return? Comments and evaluations by educators all over the country show that students with lessened hunger risk because of programs such as ours have marked improvement in a number of areas. Improved school attendance and reading skills, better test scores, positive behavior, better health and everything else you can imagine that goes hand in hand with healthy children getting a good education.
