….keep mind and body healthy with dancing.

Besides being fun, dance has health benefits that may surprise you. Shows like “Dancing with the Stars” are popular to watch, but Robin Sandland of Dance Club International explains why you should get up and get dancing!

Dancing is great exercise – It is good for the heart and cardiovascular system and increases lung capacity. It increases circulation and burns calories while improving stamina. It is estimated that dance burns 5 to 10 calories per minute depending on speed and intensity. Styles like swing and mambo burn more calories than a slow waltz.

It aids in lipid control, raising HDL (the good cholesterol) and lowering LDL (the bad cholesterol). The balance that dancing requires strengthens stabilizer muscles, protecting the core and keeping dancers less prone to injury. It also aids in coordination and strengthens reflexes. “The extra bonus is it is a non jarring physical exercise,” Robin said.

Research published in “The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition” found that a weekly dance program could also improve physical performance and increase energy levels among adults.

Boost memory Dance exercises the mind by improving memory through memorizing steps, routines and dance patterns. Mental exercise keeps your mind alert and quick.

Dancing is recreational and entertaining Dancing has no cultural barriers. You’ll learn about different cultures and ideologies.

Make friends Being socially engaged leads to increased happiness, self confidence and self-discipline. Dance elevates your mood by raising endorphin levels also reducing stress and symptoms of depression.
