Why timing matters: Understanding hair growth phases for lasting hair removal results

One of the most important things we teach our clients at A Bare Necessity Electrolysis & Laser Skincare is that timing is everything. Whether we’re using precision heat energy through electrolysis or concentrated light energy through laser technology, success depends on catching each hair at just the right moment in its growth cycle.
You see, every hair on the body grows in phases. The anagen phase [active growth] is when the hair is firmly attached to its blood supply and still receiving nutrients. This is the golden window — the phase where both laser and electrolysis can effectively disable the follicle, preventing that hair from growing back. The other two stages, catagen [transitional phase] and telogen [resting phase], are not responsive to treatment because the root system has already detached from the capillaries.
The challenge? Not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time. Even within a small area — like the chin or lip — each hair cycles through different stages independently. This is why you may finish a treatment and then notice hairs appearing a few weeks, even days, later. These are not the same follicles that were just treated. They are the next “set” of new hairs breaking the skin surface.
To achieve smooth, lasting results, it’s essential to maintain a consistent treatment schedule to catch the hairs in the correct phase. At A Bare Necessity, laser sessions are typically spaced a few weeks apart, while electrolysis intervals depend on the specific area and hair characteristics. Following these intervals allows us to catch each follicle in its most vulnerable growth phase as it naturally cycles.
This timing factor is why permanent hair removal is a process, not a quick fix. Depending on your hair density, hormonal influences, skin type and many other factors, completing a full series of treatments can take several months and longer. However, by honoring the science of hair growth and sticking to your appointment plan, you’ll achieve the long-term, silky-smooth results you’re hoping for — safely and effectively.
One of the advantages of modern hair removal is flexibility. Electrolysis, in particular, treats any color hair on any color skin, anywhere on the body — making it a reliable option for areas and hair types that laser can not address. By offering both technologies, we’re able to customize treatment plans based on each client’s unique needs, goals and hair patterns.
We also understand that life changes, and therefore we do not require package purchases. Pay as you go and only for what you need. This approach allows clients to continue their progress without pressure, contracts or unnecessary commitments, while still receiving consistent, expert care.
Our approach is rooted in education. We believe that clients have a right to understand what is happening to their body and why. Once you understand how a process works, you then have the confidence to choose which options fit best for you. From your first visit, we take the time to explain what to expect, how your hair cycles behave and how each session builds toward permanent results.
Comfort and precision are also at the forefront of everything we do. Advances in technology allow us to deliver effective treatments while prioritizing skin health and minimizing irritation. Every service is performed with careful attention to detail, ensuring each follicle is treated safely and thoroughly, no matter the area on the body.
Just as important, we tailor every experience to the individual. No two clients are exactly alike, and neither are their treatment plans. By combining expertise, flexibility and a personalized approach, we help clients achieve results that feel as good as they look — smooth, lasting and uniquely their own.
Remember, patience pays off in permanent hair removal. With time, consistency and the right expertise, each treatment brings you one step closer to never needing to shave, pluck or wax again.
If you’re curious about whether laser or electrolysis is the better fit for your goals, we love to teach. The best place to start is with your personalized and complimentary consultation, where we can look at your hair growth patterns, talk honestly about expectations and build a no pressure treatment plan that respects both the science of hair growth and your personal situation.
