Brevard County is grateful for Specialists like Dr. Venzara, Tweito and Guglielmo
Dr. Eric Guglielmo [gu-YEL-mo] is a board certified Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal surgeon. He specializes in a variety of medical and surgical conditions of the retina and vitreous including age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment repair, endophthalmitis, uveitis and retinal vascular diseases.
Dr. Guglielmo relocated to the Space Coast from the cold state of Washington, where he was established with one of the largest ophthalmology practices in the state, and performed thousands of surgeries over his eleven years there.
He also has extensive research experience, having been an investigator in several large nation-wide clinical trials for newly developed retinal treatments.
Dr. Guglielmo shares, “My personal philosophy as a doctor; As a former high school teacher, I pride myself on my ability to explain things to patients in a way they can understand. It is important to me that every patient is involved in their care, from understanding the diagnosis to proceeding with the treatment. I will do everything I can to make sure their questions are answered, and they feel comfortable with the decisions we make together about their retinal condition.”
Dr. “G”, as his patients call him, started out as a Georgia Bulldog, attending University of Georgia and majoring in English Education, and continued on to achieve his Masters Degree in English education from UGA. He then moved to Alaska where he taught high school English for several years before deciding to drastically change careers in 1999. After completing a Post-baccalaureate Pre-Med program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, he attended University of Nevada School of Medicine, where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society for the highest grade point average in his Medical School, as a Junior. He also received several other awards there, including Outstanding Medical Student in Biochemistry, Outstanding Medical Student in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Outstanding Medical Student in Neurosciences.
Dr. Guglielmo continued his training with a Transitional Internship at Sacred Heart Medical Center, and then Ophthalmology Residency at Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City, one of the top ranked Ophthalmology programs in the country. He finished his Fellowship training in Vitreoretinal Surgery with West Virginia Eye Institute in 2010.
We are honored that Dr. Guglielmo decided to relocate to the Space Coast to join Florida Retina Specialists. He also recently re-married in May 2024 and is very happy that his new wife, Athena, and 3 of her children have joined him in sunny Florida. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, spending time with his new wife, his three grown daughters and five step-children, and is looking forward to discovering new activities with them now that he lives in a warm and coastal environment.
Florida Retina Specialists:
It’s important to have a good Ophthalmologist or Retina Surgeon after the age of 60 to closely monitor your cataracts, macular degeneration, and overall vision health. And if you didn’t know this yet, Age-Related Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of visual acuity loss in people over the age of 50. However, there are people of all ages in Brevard County who need a Retina Specialist for things like flashes and floaters in their vision, trauma to the eye, a tear in the retina needing laser repair, diabetic retinopathy and spontaneous retinal detachments causing blindness if not repaired with surgery.
Dr. Frank Venzara, Dr. Timothy Tweito and Dr. Eric Guglielmo at Florida Retina Specialists are world-class surgeons who provide sight-saving treatments and surgeries every day.
