Flooring America reaches scholarship milestone

130 students have received $1,000 scholarships

Great Southeast Flooring America in Melbourne has built more than beautiful floors. It is building futures. The locally owned flooring store recently celebrated a milestone in its annual scholarship program, surpassing $130,000 in total awards since the initiative began nearly a decade ago.

Each spring, 17 high school seniors — one from each Brevard County public high school — receive a $1,000 scholarship to help offset rising college costs. It is a gesture that reflects the company’s enduring commitment to the community that has helped it thrive.

Growth of the program

The program started modestly in 2017, awarding a single scholarship at Satellite High School, the alma mater of store owner Nelson Green. Since then, it has expanded countywide.

Recipients are selected not just for strong academics but also for character traits such as leadership, civic-mindedness and integrity.

Soaring price of education

“We just want to make higher education a little more attainable, in light of how quickly the costs are going up,” Green said. “It is a way to invest directly in the young people shaping our community.”

Those costs are daunting. The average in-state tuition at public universities tops $11,000 per year, while room, board and other necessities can bring that total to nearly $30,000 annually. At private institutions, the figure can exceed $60,000. For most local families, every contribution matters.

How to apply

Eligible Brevard seniors submit a 500-word essay titled “How I Would Use the $1,000” to their school counselor by April 1 each year. While this year’s [2026] deadline has passed, students are encouraged to plan ahead for next year’s opportunity. Recipients are honored annually by the Great Southeast Flooring America team — a moment Green describes as one of his favorite company traditions.

“It is inspiring to see the drive and potential these students have,” he said. “Each award reminds us how powerful community support can be.”

‘An amazing scholarship’

Award recipients from previous years say the scholarship has helped defray mounting education costs.

“Great Southeast Flooring America is an amazing scholarship that I was fortunate to receive,” said Olivia Harris, a graduate last year from Merritt Island High School. “Their scholarship helped me purchase my books and pay some of my housing fees.”

Logan Carr, a 2025 recipient from Satellite High School, echoed that sentiment.

“Because it was awarded as a direct scholarship, I was able to put it toward my room and board at Cornell, which was a tremendous help to both me and my family,” Carr said. “It eased a significant financial burden and made my transition to college much more manageable. I am truly grateful.”
