Digging into Brevard’s rich history

CHARLIE SCHOLES
The 72 miles of seashore we call the Space Coast have attracted folks searching for a better way of life for a long, long time. They were here before the Renaissance, the Dark Ages and the Roman Empire. When King Tut was but a toddler, this area was already home to many, as readers of Space Coast Living’s Spring issue will discover.
In 1982, the world of archaeology was rocked by a find many experts consider as important as the treasures found in King Tut’s tomb. The location for such a major discovery was an unlikely one: a new housing development in Titusville. While long-time residents may still remember the headlines Windover Dig made back in the 1980s, many who have moved here have not heard the fascinating story of a civilization 8,000 years old. In this issue, you have a chance to meet the people who truly were Brevard’s first pioneers.
Fun fact: Brevard also attracted Wright Brothers. No, not those Wright Brothers, but a freed slave with the same name and one of the first three black settlers in the southern part of the county. Space Coast Living also looks at the lives and legacy of these men of color through the Founders’ Museum at Crane Creek, a new museum that celebrates the contributions of the area’s black pioneers.
Speaking of celebrating, this spring, the Platinum Coast Orchid Society will clock in its 60th annual orchid show, a festive display of what are arguably the most gorgeous flowers on the planet. This issue of Space Coast Living celebrates this organization that shares so much beauty with us.
With spring comes wanderlust, inspiring travel plans and perhaps even the search for a new abode. If you have six-plus million and are looking for a new nest, we are gladly sharing with you all about a special home you could snag in the fabled South Tropical Trail.
Any time of year is good for a few days hopping along sunny islands, and for Brevard residents, that travel dream is a cinch to realize, particularly with writer Michelle Balzanto’s story of Port Canaveral’s options, which are many, since Brevard’s hometown port has been alternating for several years with Port Miami for the title of first and second busiest cruise ports in the world.
From Brevard’s oldest residents to the latest sailings from Port Canaveral, Space Coast Living has you covered. Enjoy the read.
