Darn It! An Old Skill Reimagined at Fiber Guild Meeting
A demonstration of darning will be the program when the Space Coast Weavers and Fiber Artists meet on at 10 am on March 22 at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N Courtenay Pkwy,
This is NOT Your Grandmother’s Sock Darning! Years ago darning was a common skill, used to repair holes and reinforce worn areas in socks, blankets, and clothing. In today’s throwaway society, we seldom do this kind of repair. But there is beauty in the crisscrossing stitch work that is darning.
Candy Grammel will demonstrate this type of needlework and show examples of how it can be used today. Come see how you can use darning tools from the 50’s to add decorative touches and visible mending to clothing or as works of art. .
Since 1983 SCW&FA has been Brevard’s go-to guild for fiber arts: spinning, weaving, basketry, rug hooking, and more. The guild helps fiber artists, beginning or advanced, learn through workshops and the informal exchange of ideas. They also work to educate the public about the fiber arts. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information, call Jeanie McCormack at 321-266-1610. or visit https://www.spacecoastweaversandfiberartists.org
