In addition to the children’s summer camp, the academy offered
a special camp for older teens and adults. It is a popular gals
get-together destination and also offers bridal parties, Boozy
Bakes that incorporate alcoholic ingredients and date nights.
“They can make their own dinner, eat it there and take home
what they don’t eat,” Ferrara-McEllin said.
Students arrive from as far as Vero Beach and Orlando for the
unique classes. A Sarasota couple even celebrated their 20th
anniversary at the academy after the wife invited her husband
and another couple to a mystery road trip.
As the season of holidays approaches, the classes will focus on
subjects such as gingerbread houses, holiday cookies and cupcakes
and party hors d’oeuvres such as baked Brie en Croute.
With a nod to European baking, classes on Old Country delicacies
such as the beloved English Bakewell Tart, the gooey German
Schnecken and Chocolate Biscuit Cake Baubles are scheduled.
In the understatement of the year, Ferrara-McEllin summarized
her academy.
“We do a lot of baking,” she said.
