Throughout a long career in the food industry, the Aker family have adhered to an ethos of hard work, respect for customers and value for product provided. The formula has proven successful in all their endeavors, beginning with Downtown Produce’s wholesale distribution business in 1982, continuing with the opening of their Melbourne market in 2007 and now with their latest project, Florida Cork & Bottle.
Jill and Gaylord Aker, together with sons Ian and Russell and managing partner Juan Arias, have created a unique spirits, wine and beer boutique that enhances the customer experience. The 4,000-square-foot store at 1916 Highway A1A in Indian Harbour Beach features an elegant 12-foot tasting bar the family plans to keep busy with tasting opportunities.
“It’s the largest tasting bar in the area by a long shot,” Ian Aker said.
Multiple tastings are scheduled daily every weekend, and at Florida Cork & Bottle, weekends begin on Thursdays.
“We want people to try before they buy,” Jill Aker said.
With Florida Cork & Bottle, the Akers are expanding on the already extensive portfolio of wines customers at Downtown Produce have come to expect.
“We have a much wider selection of higher-end wines, and also a wide range of value wines and a full gamut of liquor,” Jill said.
Fans of spirits such as bourbon, rums and tequila should be delighted with the collection available.
“With 16 linear feet of tequilas, we definitely have the largest selection of tequilas in the county,” Ian said.
A free loyalty program provides discounts off purchases and 10 percent off six or more bottles
of liquor or wine, mix and match. The store also carries a variety of cheeses, charcuterie goodies, decanters and accessories.
