On March 10, 2026, the automotive industry and the countless lives it touched lost a quiet giant. Robert P. Kelly, 91, leaves behind a legacy defined not only by business success but by integrity, humility and an unwavering commitment to people.
Born in Ambler, Pennsylvania, to Edward J. Kelly Sr. and Rose Scanlan Kelly, Bob grew up in a family shaped by resilience. His father, a Plymouth and DeSoto dealer, endured the Great Depression and World War II, instilling in his sons the values of hard work and perseverance.
Bob attended LaSalle Prep, studied at the University of Notre Dame and graduated from Villanova University in 1956. Some of his proudest moments came from his time serving in the United States military, an experience that further shaped his discipline, character and lifelong commitment to service.
In 1959, Bob and his brothers made the pivotal decision to step away from the family business and build something of their own. After several years of preparation, they acquired their first dealership in 1963. By 1967, they expanded into the Lehigh Valley, laying the foundation for what would become a multigenerational automotive legacy.
Growth followed not recklessly but intentionally, expanding into Florida, Georgia and Pennsylvania while maintaining a consistent philosophy. Bob believed success was not just about selling cars. It was about doing business the right way. That mindset reflected accountability, discipline and long-term thinking — principles that built not only profitable dealerships but sustainable ones.
Beyond business, Bob was a devoted family man. He gave his children and grandchildren every opportunity to succeed and found his greatest joy in time spent with them, especially on the golf course. His youngest son, Tim Kelly, serves as dealer of Kelly Ford in Melbourne, Florida, while his elder son, Greg Kelly is the president of the Kelly Automotive Group.
Bob often reminded those around him that there is no silver bullet. The difference between an average life and a great one comes from the little things done consistently, day in and day out over time.
A quiet philanthropist, he supported more than 50 charitable causes annually, often without recognition.
Nearly a century after his family first entered the automotive industry, Bob’s influence remains woven into every part of it, not just in operations but in values.
Integrity. Discipline. Responsibility. Family.
Those were not just principles he believed in. They were principles he lived, and they continue today through his lasting legacy.
