FACES OF MEDICINE
LEANN MANDESE, O.D.
DOCTOR OF OPTOMETRY
DRY EYE EXPERT
Dr. LeAnn Mandese owns the Atlantis Dry Eye Clinic in
Indian Harbour Beach. Dr. Mandese told Space Coast Living
about her practice and how it has changed most recently.
Our world today has an increase in reported dry eye cases coming
from multiple sources. “We as humans have never had so much
screen time as we do now. Our blink rate reduces by 70% when
we’re on a device, be it a phone, a tablet, a computer, even just
a concentrated task like tying knots, or knitting. Since our blink
rate decreases, we see exponentially drier eyes than we did 30
years ago,” said Mandese.
So, Mandese has invested in equipment and research, educating
herself, becoming a Dry Eye Expert.
“I have always taken a special interest in dry eyes,” she added.
Noting that the field has expanded exponentially over the past
decade. “When I was in school, it was just, ‘Hey, your eyes are
dry. Here are some artificial tears.’ I now have an ever-expanding
arsenal to treat dry eyes. We really have come to understand that
it is a multifaceted dysfunction of the tear film that equates to
what people perceive as dry eyes. Patients are often surprised
that their symptoms of discomfort and blur are caused by
dryness. We do an extensive evaluation of the different layers
of the tear film to identify where the dysfunction is occurring
and discuss the individual risk factors. We discuss lifestyle,
diet, medications and environmental causes of the dry eyes.”
“We typically start treatment in a step wise fashion, beginning
with the basics, Preservative Free Artificial Tears, warm
compresses and vitamins. Depending on the root cause we can
add prescription eye drops, autologous serum and amniotic fluid
to regenerate the layers of the tear that are dysfunctional.Because
of the complexity of dry eye, we take a multifaceted approach
with the treatments. There is no silver bullet. I’m amazed and
excited at the technology and resources that I have available
to me. I’m seeing so many patients with improvements in their
symptoms and for those it can be life changing,” said Mandese.
