Protecting and Providing a Voice
for Homeless Animals
September is Brevard SPCA’s 42nd year dedicated to animals in
our community. The organization started in Brevard County but
has grown to service all of Florida and has come to be known as
an organization that not only helps animals here in Brevard, but
also throughout the state of Florida and beyond when there is
a natural disaster or when other shelters are in trouble. Susan
Naylor, Associate Director for the SPCA Brevard added, “We want
to be a resource for people if they need to surrender their pets,
but we also are growing a community pet program that allows
people to keep their pets. Sometimes we are able to provide food,
and sometimes medical care. If it is a major expense, we may have
to fundraise for it. But that’s part of our mission.” The SPCA does
not receive any funding from a national organization, and they
do not get money from taxes. Every dollar that the SPCA brings in
is through fundraisers, donations and from its full-service clinic,
Cheney Animal Clinic in Titusville. There are also two thrift
stores, one in Titusville, and a new one in Melbourne. “The thrift
store in Melbourne is also an adoption center for cats, as well as
an event center for us. We have started to hold monthly events,
and we’re excited about the opportunities those events bring us,”
Naylor added.

Every dollar of the money
raised goes directly to
help saving animals in
the SPCA’s care. Naylor
added, “A big push now
in animal welfare is
helping pets stay in their
homes. It is a better
use of resources to help
somebody keep their pet,
whether it’s providing
food or basic medical
care than for us to have
to intake that animal,
give them all the medical
care and then house them
until we find an adopter.
We’re striving to be a pet
resource center. Not only
for people to be able to
adopt, but for people to
keep their pets.”
