Protecting our environment is a key value shared by many on
the Space Coast, as evidenced by the recent election in which Brevard voters agreed to buy more land to be
protected from development. Fred Mays shares the details in Safeguarding the Future beginning on Page 36.

Ensuring a robust Brevard economy for the future is the mission of the Economic Development Commission
of Florida’s Space Coast. In Redefining Mission, beginning on Page 44, Maria Sonnenberg writes about how the
commission is working on a collaborative effort to define the area economically and develop a brand for it.
In some ways, Brevard can be a tropical oasis, and in Labor of Love beginning on Page 62, you’ll find out how
tropical fruit trees can be raised successfully on the Space Coast.
Finally, meet one of Brevard’s best tennis players, Mark Harrison, in Courting Champions beginning on Page
66. Harrison, a member of the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame, is a past winner of the United States Tennis
Association’s national at Forest Hills.
Harrison continues to compete throughout the world while pursuing an active teaching career
in Melbourne and New York’s Hamptons.
