Flooring America keeps scholarships rolling for 16 area schools
Higher education isn’t cheap these days. One
local business is doing what it can to help.
This is the sixth consecutive year Great Southeast
Flooring America has been providing
scholarship money to college-bound seniors
at 16 Brevard County high schools. Once the
students receive their awards this year, the
program will have given away $61,000 in funds
to help defray college and university expenses.
“This is something we really look forward to
every year,” said Chris Green, Vice President
and General Manager of Great Southeast
Flooring America. “We enjoy meeting all the
recipients — they’re outstanding young people.
Helping them achieve their educational
goals is a privilege and an honor. It’s also a
way for us to help the community that has
helped our business during the past 43 years.”
Any graduating senior interested in a
$1,000 scholarship must complete an online
application and write a 500-word essay on
how he or she will use the money. Guidance
counselors from each school will recommend
and ultimately determine which student is the
recipient. The applicants should demonstrate
a high degree of integrity, citizenship,
achievement, sportsmanship and leadership.
Brevard County high schools participating in
the program are Astronaut, Bayside, Cocoa
Beach, Cocoa, Eau Gallie, Edgewood, Heritage,
Melbourne, Merritt Island, Palm Bay Magnet,
Rockledge, Satellite, Space Coast, Titusville,
Viera and West Shore.
The scholarship program started out in 2017
when Great Southeast Flooring America
donated $1,000 to a college-bound senior
from Satellite High School.
“We’ve had a dozen or so members of the
Green family graduate from Satellite High
School,” Green said. “We wanted to honor that
family tradition by helping out one of the
students. The program just grew from there.”
The following year, Green expanded the
scholarship program to include Rockledge
High. The number grew to 10 students in 2019
and the current 16 in 2020.
Any student wishing to participate in the
scholarship program can complete the
online application on the Great Southeast
Flooring America website. Just visit www.
southeastflooringamerica.com and
click the “Learn More” button over the
scholarship graphic near the top of the
page. Flooring America will forward the
submitted applications to the schools’
guidance counselor offices. The deadline to
submit an application is April 15.
The students will receive notification of the
scholarship at each school’s awards ceremony
at the end of the school year.
