Plying Handspun Yarn with Keith Straley

The Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists will meet at 10 am on Saturday , March 25, at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N. Courtenay Parkway. Keith Straley will demonstrate “Plying Handspun Yarn”

When yarn is spun it creates one single ply of yarn.  Twisting one or more together creates a stronger yarn and adjusts the thickness. Keith will demonstrate two different plying techniques on the spinning wheel.  Chain Plying uses one spun single to produce a three ply yarn while Cable Plying uses two spun singles to produce a four ply yarn. Keith will also explore how these techniques can create a variety of color effects in finished yarn.

Participants are encouraged to bring their wheels and 1-3 bobbins of spun singles depending on which plying techniques they want to try out.

Keith is a local writer, jeweler, and multimedia artist currently exploring pre-modern fashions using ancient, modern and innovated technologies and materials. A Cocoa High alumnus and US Army veteran, he is the owner of Reset20 Studios. His work is available online on Etsy, and locally at Mrs. Mango & Company, Knit & Stitch Boutique and various art shows.

Since 1983 SCW&FA has been Brevard’s go to guild for fiber arts: spinning, weaving, basketry, rug hooking, and more.  The guild helps fiber artists, beginning or advanced, learn through workshops and the informal exchange of ideas. They also work to educate the public about the fiber arts.  Meetings are free and open to the public.  For more information call Jeanie McCormack at 321-266-1610.

The event is finished.
