1. Stick to the Plan. When designing a new space, it’s important to create a floor plan first. This plan will serve as your roadmap to create the perfect layout for your future space. Measure the space and mark doors, windows and even outlets on this drawing, so when it comes time to decorate, you’ll have a detailed guideline. {TIP} Loading your floor plan onto your Smart Phone or tablet is a great way to keep your document close at hand, while on the hunt for all your room’s accessories.

2. Function over Form. As you plan your space, consider both form and function, but concentrate a little more on the functionality of your room, rather than its appearance. Navigating through your space should feel comfortable, not confusing.{ TIP } Spend some time walking through the display floor plans of your favorite furniture stores to gain perspective.

3. Light things up. Lighting is another important element that many designers view as the key to any space. When selecting your lighting, be sure that it complements your overall décor, while providing a sense of warmth and function. Whether it’s carefully placed uplighting or a statement chandelier, it must match your room’s personality.{ TIP } Go green. Eco-friendly lights are not only more energy-efficient, but they cast a warmer glow.

4. Color me well. Regardless of the size of your room, it is never truly complete without color, as it sets the tone for any space. Don’t be afraid to choose bold shades to bring out your room’s personality, as even a little color can go a long way. { TIP } Still hesitant to work with daring hues? Accent pillows, curtains or rugs can make the same colorful statement in a less permanent way.

5. Keep it in Perspective. Whether it’s large windows in a small room or grand furniture in a large space, it is important to decorate to scale, which will ultimately maximize the space as a whole. { TIP } Decorating a small room? Choose smaller furniture and implement long mirrors to add depth to the space.

6.Keep it Simple. It is important to have a discriminating eye when it comes time to decorating your space. Select a few bold pieces, rather than a slew of un-functional ones, when accessorizing your room.{ TIP } When scaling down your current room accessories, set aside your most meaningful pieces and implement just them into your current design as a way to prevent unnecessary clutter.

7. Don’t Feel overwhelmed. Harness the excitement of designing the room of your dreams, and keep your eyes on the big picture. Designing your space should be fun, not stressful. Remember, at the end of the day, you’re designing for you, so focus on creating a space that makes you feel good.{ TIP } Create an inspiration board to help you better visualize what you hope to get out of your future space.
