Yes, that’s right, my day starts that early. I immediately turn on the oven. I am such a stickler for freshly made products that I do my daily order baking that very morning. There are no baking days in advance or even the night before unless it’s a huge order like a wedding cake.
The oven is hot and my first cup of hot tea has been consumed before the fun stuff begins. Several batches of vanilla bean, double chocolate chunk, and hummingbird cake are whipped up. During these early hours, I tend to multi-task and make several different flavors of fresh buttercream while my cakes bake. After my buttercreams are made and the cakes are cooling, I take a brief moment to make a schedule for my day.
Time to be mom for a moment and get the rest of the household up for work and school. Not only do I get the lunches packed and the clothes ironed, I am also the kids’ chauffeur. I make sure their bellies are filled with breakfast and dropped off to school before the bell rings. I will also finish icing my first two standard delivery orders for the day while waiting for the rest of the household to get ready.
9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
After dropping off the kids, I’m now focused on finishing up the cakes and cupcake orders. I also take time to check in with my CakeKrush Facebook page to answer each and every person that posts to my page and respond to any messages I may receive pertaining to future events.
If I don’t have many deliveries that day, I am almost sure to have a client cake tasting meeting set up. Whether it is mid-week or a Friday before a wedding, my schedule varies. I have learned to be very flexible and open to change.
4 – 7 p.m.
Once the kids are picked up from school, family time starts. From band practice to music lessons and sports functions, it is extremely important to always make it to each and every event my kids are involved in. My schedule may be quite hectic, but I make it happen no matter what.
7 – 8 p.m.
Dinnertime. I cook as much as I can, but if a huge event is scheduled, we plan to go out to eat. I don’t want to deal with cleaning dishes when I have been baking all day.
9 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Bedtime for most of the house except for me. This is the time of night that I do any baking for huge orders such as wedding cakes that must be baked at least two nights before. This allows for all layers of the cake to settle and become thoroughly cooled before I ice and design them the following day. While the cakes are baking, I am checking my e-mails, ordering supplies, or researching new recipes that inspire me. Typically, I put my own spin on them to come up with a new CakeKrush flavor.
Lights out! I’m exhausted and hope to dream of all things sweet.
